Compost Paradise

Development of a composting system

September 2020 – July 2021

I carried out my first Permaculture project at the Weidenhof farm near Gernsbach as part of my advanced training at the Permaculture Academy. It involved the productive use of organic waste produced on the farm. As part of the project, I developed a system for the safe composting of the material, which also included the management of the raw materials and the design and placement of the storage sites. Ultimately, this was followed by a concept for composting toilets and their integration into the farm's operations.

Experience that flows into new projects

Methodological:

  • Walking through a Permaculture design process
  • Application of design tools
  • Reading landscapes
  • Screening for public law requirements and regulations

Ecological-Technical:

  • Insight into various composting methods (hot composting, bokashi, vermicomposting, Berkeley method)
  • Construction drawings of storage units for raw materials and a composting toilet
  • Coordination of earthworks with the machine operator
  • Anwendung von dynamischen Akkumulatoren + Chop&Drop-Methode
  • Root propagation
  • Animal observation

Social:

  • Client meetings

proto.topia

Design internship

August 2021

For about three weeks, our team worked on a Permaculture design for the market garden proto.topia near Jüterbog. Under the guidance of the internship supervisor, we focused on getting to grips with the design process, trying out new methods and consolidating those we already knew. The requirement from proto.topia was to bring a largely unused area into production, while incorporating fire protection, water retention and soil building. The result included water retention elements, road layout, and vegetation that has fire-retardant properties, produces biomass, and has marketing potential.

Experience that flows into new projects

Methodological:

  • Walking through a Permaculture design process
  • Application of design tools and methods
  • Reading landscapes

Ecological-Technical:

  • Land surveying with an A-frame
  • Positioning and installation of water retention elements
  • Insight into fire-retardant design elements

Social:

  • Design and synthesis in teamwork

Maitreya Healing Biotope

Healing people and nature

October 2021 – July 2023

At the invitation of Maitreya, I created a Permaculture design for an approximately 20-hectare section of the existing almond plantation. In the past, conventional farming methods had led to severe soil degradation. The community project wanted to pursue a new approach by establishing a retreat for alternative healing methods and required a design that would meet the new requirements. The result was a concept for the regenerative management of the existing almond plantation and a land use plan that addressed the needs of a retreat and community center. The aim was to connect the healing processes of humans and nature. You can find a detailed description of the design process here.

After that, I accompanied Maitreya as part of the community for about a year and a half during the implementation phase. During this time, I started and managed a vegetable garden and a tree nursery, carried out water retention work and road repairs, and coordinated tree pruning and harvesting activities.

Experience that flows into new projects

Methodological:

  • Going through a Permaculture design process in an agricultural context
  • Application of design tools
  • Reading landscapes

Ecological-Technical:

  • Intensive work with GIS applications
  • Working out garden plans for mixed cultivation
  • Working with Mediterranean crops in semi-arid climates
  • Tree & plant nursing
  • Pruning of various crops (olive, almond, grapevine, pomegranate, citrus fruits)
  • Soil building & water retention measures
  • Animal observation

Social:

  • Insight into community-building processes
  • Volunteer coordination
  • Coordination of harvesting activities

Water – Our Life and our Responsibility

Conceptualization, organization, and conduct of a course

November 2023

Together with my partner Nikolas Mews, I held the first course on water retention at the Maitreya Healing Biotope. The course covered theory and practice of water retention in the landscape, low-water-use planting, and graywater utilization. The semi-arid conditions of southern Spain provided an authentic setting for this. After the theory sessions in the morning, we tried out various methods of surveying and addressing the terrain before working together to install a swale and several half-moons. These served to collect water from a nearby road where it was causing erosion. In addition, the overall infiltration capacity of Maitreya was increased and the water was used to irrigate the exposed, particularly dry ridge. Finally, the retention elements created were planted according to the model of syntropic agroforestry systems.

Throughout the week, there were additional activities for community building, nature-connecting exercises from wilderness education, yoga, and a sound journey.

Berrie – Traveling Rewilded

Tailoring a dream trip

January 2024 – December 2025

For a joint voyage with my partner, we used the Dragon Dreaming design process model to create successful joint projects. Adapted to our needs and context, we held a dream circle and worked our way towards our joint roadmap, the Karrabirth. The design process helped us to structure ourselves and to honestly exchange and integrate our respective needs. This gave us clarity about the necessary steps — even if the outcome was unexpected in the end.

One of my intentions for this trip was to engage further with Permaculture with a view to my professional development. Accordingly, I spent a considerable amount of time in Senegal and Colombia, where I not only gained insights into the respective flora, fauna, and culture, but also became involved in local Permaculture and forest garden projects.

Experience that flows into new projects

Methodological:

  • Application of Dragon Dreaming as a design process model
  • Digitization & cataloging of existing plantings

Ecological-Technical:

  • Becoming familiar with (sub)tropical (cultivated) plants in their natural environment and working with them
  • Planting & management of (syntropic) forest garden systems
  • Guidance on management measures for syntropic systems
  • Production of biochar
  • Establishing a seed bank

Social:

  • Conduction of workshops
  • Consulting
